BIG NAMES FROM THE BOLSHOI, ROYAL AND KIROV DEPICT BACKSTAGE REALITY

Shooting Images is a journey through more than a decade of beautiful black-and-white photographs by Sasha Gusov, spanning countries, nationalities and thought-provoking subject matter. The images in this book catapult you from the rawness of India to the gloss of New York or Paris. For dance enthusiasts, Gusov's empathy with and understanding for both dancer and location allow some bold glimpses into the many contrasts of the dance world, its varied moods and expressions. Big names from the Bolshoi, Royal and Kirov depict backstage reality, on-stage poise and technical brilliance.

The variety and pace hold the reader's attention, with every image telling a very different story. Merely to say Gusov's photographs are beautiful does not do them justice - the word seems almost bland as a description Sasha Gusov of the diversity of these images. They are amazing, stunning, humorous, emotional, inspiring. Gusov uses photography in the very best way . . . to capture a moment which would otherwise be lost to the world forever. He seems to have an exceptional talent for taking an ordinary subject and finding its soul. From children to adults, animals to architecture, each photograph pushes the boundaries of what we see and shows us the beauty and spirit of the world and humanity. Perhaps the weakest images are the ones that seem posed or contrived, but even these show the wit and humour that is evident in so much of his work.

The compositions are always sensitive to the subject, with an immediate message to the viewer followed by several whispers. Interpret them as you will, but I would defy anyone not to be wooed into taking a second look.
